GloWILD at the zoo, worth the ticket or one and done?

My wife wants to go to GloWILD at the Little Rock Zoo. Giant silk lanterns, some of them up to 30 feet tall, and over half a million lights. It's ticketed select nights from Oct 29 through Jan 3. They're also doing a sensory night and a family New Year's Eve, which is a nice touch.

We haven't been, and I'm the one who looks at the total once you add up four tickets and parking and a hot chocolate or two. So for anyone who's gone: is it worth it, or is it a see-it-once kind of thing?

Also trying to figure out the best nights to dodge the crowds. Is a weeknight noticeably better than a weekend? Early entry or later? And how bad is the cold? December in Little Rock can be 60 one week and 28 with wind the next, and I don't want to be standing in line at the gate with cold kids. Is there much covered or indoor, or is it all outside the whole loop?

Any tips on parking would help too. I assume it fills up on the busy nights.

We went on a weeknight a couple weeks into December and it was way more relaxed than I expected. Weekends and anything close to Christmas are where the crowds pile up, so if your schedule allows a Tuesday or Wednesday, take it. Going right at opening also means you see the lanterns while the lines are short, and you can bail before the kids melt down.

The loop is mostly outdoors, so plan on being outside the whole time. Layers matter more than a heavy coat, because that 60-then-28 swing you mentioned is real. Hand warmers in the pockets, and a thermos if you want to save on the hot chocolate. It's a lot like fishing the river in January, where the cold is fine if you dress for it.

I'd call it worth it once, especially with kids. Check the zoo's site for which nights are open and when. I'd get there early for parking too.

Good to know a weeknight is that much calmer. Tuesday or Wednesday should work, since the kids have school the next day and we'd want to be home early anyway. Opening time makes sense too.

The thermos idea might save us more than I'd like to admit. Four hot chocolates at zoo prices adds up fast, and that's on top of the tickets.

Did parking fill up on your weeknight, or was the main lot fine? Just trying to figure out whether we need to show up 30 minutes early or if that's overkill.

We went on a Wednesday last year and parking was fine, but I'd still show up 20 or 30 minutes before your entry time, Kevin. Not because the lot was full, just so you're not rushing the kids from the car to the gate in the dark. It's War Memorial Park, so if there's anything going on at the stadium the same night, I'd leave even earlier. Worth a quick look at the zoo's site before you pick your night.

Clay's right about layers. The lanterns look bigger when you're walking right up under them, and the kids kept stopping to stare so we moved slower than I planned. That means you stand around in the cold more than you'd think.

For the thermos, check the thrift stores or a Saturday yard sale. I got a good insulated one for like two dollars and it's been to every cold ballgame since. Fill it with the cheap packet cocoa from home and nobody knows the difference.

Good call on checking the stadium schedule. War Memorial is right there, so a high school playoff game or anything else going on that night is going to eat the lots fast. Weeknights should be clear most of the time, but a quick look at the calendar before you lock in a date is smart.

The $2 thermos is the real move 👍 I've got a beat-up steel one that's been to more Friday night games and lake walks than I can count. Packet cocoa tastes fine when it's 30 degrees out, nobody's judging.

Clay's right about layers. Wool socks too, your feet go first when you're standing under those lanterns.

If the farmers market vendors still have cider that late in the season, it beats packet cocoa in a thermos.
